Three days after the Supreme Court issued its first set of , President Donald Trump\u2019s request for the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision to leave in place the 2023 verdict against him in a civil suit brought by E. Jean Carroll has been distributed to the justices. This means that the court could act on Trump\u2019s request on the next set of summer orders, which are scheduled to be released on Monday, Aug. 17.<\/p>\n

Carroll filed the lawsuit that led to Trump\u2019s petition in a federal court in New York in 2022. She alleged that Trump had sexually assaulted her in a dressing room at a Manhattan department store in 1996 and then defamed her in 2022 after she went public with her assault allegations. A jury ultimately awarded Carroll $5 million, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit\u00a0upheld\u00a0that verdict.<\/p>\n

Trump appealed to the Supreme Court last fall. He argued that Carroll\u2019s lawyers should not have been allowed to introduce testimony by other women who also alleged that Trump had assaulted them, as well as the 2005 \u201cAccess Hollywood\u201d tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women by their genitals.<\/p>\n

In her\u00a0, Carroll countered that even if the jury should not have been allowed to consider the evidence, it ultimately would not have made a difference because the rest of her case was so strong.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s original petition for review was first distributed for the justices\u2019 Feb. 20, 2026, conference, but the court repeatedly rescheduled it, finally considering it at the June 25 conference and denying it on June 29. Trump then filed his on July 8.<\/p>\n

The justices have not granted a petition to reconsider their denial of review since 2018.<\/p>\n
